Host Merchant Services

3.7

One of the better traditional processors. Competitive interchange-plus markups with a lifetime rate lock, month-to-month contracts, and a genuinely strong reputation. The $20/month in fixed fees and quote-required signup keep it behind Helcim for most merchants, but the rate lock and high-risk support are real differentiators.

Who Host Merchant Services is for

Host Merchant Services is one of the few traditional processors that publishes competitive interchange-plus rates, offers month-to-month contracts with no early termination fee, and backs it up with a genuinely strong reputation. A+ BBB rating with minimal complaints, 4.6 out of 5 on Trustpilot, and consistently positive third-party reviews. For a traditional merchant account provider, that track record is uncommon.

HMS works best for brick-and-mortar businesses processing $5,000 or more per month who want a dedicated merchant account with transparent pricing and personal service. Restaurants get the best deal at 0.20% + $0.09 above interchange, which is one of the lowest published restaurant markups among processors we review. Retail businesses pay 0.25% + $0.10, and ecommerce businesses pay 0.35% + $0.10.

The tradeoff is onboarding friction. There is no instant signup. You call for a quote, fill out an application, and wait for approval. If you want to be processing cards in five minutes, Square or Stripe are better choices. If you want lower rates with a processor that will not raise them on you, HMS is worth the phone call.

The lifetime rate lock

This is the feature that sets HMS apart from every other processor on this site.

HMS guarantees that your processor markup will never increase for the life of your merchant account. If you sign up at interchange + 0.25% + $0.10, that is your rate until you close the account. No biannual rate creep. No surprise increases buried in a statement. No renegotiation needed.

To be clear: interchange rates set by Visa and Mastercard can still change (and they do, typically twice per year). Those increases affect every processor equally. What HMS locks is their markup on top of interchange. That is the part most traditional processors quietly increase over time, often by 0.05-0.10% every six to twelve months. Over three years, those incremental increases can add 0.30-0.60% to your effective rate without you noticing.

The rate lock is meaningful. A business processing $20,000/month that avoids a cumulative 0.30% rate increase saves $720 per year in fees that would otherwise appear as unexplained cost increases on their monthly statement. Gravity Payments, National Processing, and most traditional ISOs do not offer this guarantee.

The pricing math

Estimated monthly costs for in-person payments ($40 average ticket, 1.8% average interchange):

Monthly volumeHMS Retail (IC + 0.25% + $0.10)Helcim (IC + 0.40% + $0.08)Dharma (IC + 0.15% + $0.08)Square (2.6% + $0.15)
$5,000~$137~$120~$137~$149
$10,000~$255~$240~$249~$298
$15,000~$372~$360~$362~$446
$25,000~$607~$600~$587~$744

Note: HMS costs include the $14.99 monthly fee and $4.95 PCI fee. Helcim has no monthly fees. Dharma’s $25 monthly fee is included.

At $5,000/month, Helcim is cheaper because its $0 monthly fee offsets the higher percentage markup. HMS and Dharma are nearly identical. All three crush Square.

At $15,000/month, HMS, Helcim, and Dharma converge to within $12/month of each other. The rate lock becomes the differentiator: HMS guarantees that $372 will not become $422 next year.

At $25,000/month and above, the differences are small enough that the rate lock, support quality, and feature set matter more than the markup gap. HMS’s guarantee of stable pricing has real value for businesses planning to stay with a processor for years.

What HMS does not do well

Self-service onboarding does not exist. You cannot sign up on the website and start processing. Every merchant goes through a quote, application, and approval process. For businesses that need to accept payments today, this is a dealbreaker.

Monthly fees add up. The $14.99 account fee plus $4.95 PCI compliance fee equals $239 per year in fixed costs before you process anything. Helcim charges $0 in monthly fees. Square charges $0. For very low-volume businesses (under $5,000/month), those fixed fees eat into the interchange-plus savings and may make a no-monthly-fee processor cheaper.

Volume discounts require negotiation. Helcim automatically reduces your markup as your processing volume grows. HMS requires you to call and negotiate for better rates. If you do not ask, you do not get a lower rate, even as your volume doubles.

Hardware pricing is opaque. HMS resells Clover hardware but does not publish prices on its website. You need a quote to know what you will pay for a terminal. The approximate retail prices (Clover Go ~$49, Clover Flex ~$599, Clover Mini ~$799) give you a starting point, but your actual cost through HMS may differ.

Bottom line

Host Merchant Services is one of the strongest traditional processors for small businesses. The interchange-plus markups are competitive, the lifetime rate lock is unique, the contract terms are genuinely merchant-friendly, and the reputation is clean. For restaurants especially, the 0.20% + $0.09 markup is hard to beat.

The choice between HMS and Helcim comes down to priorities. Helcim offers $0 monthly fees, instant self-service signup, and automatic volume discounts. HMS offers lower starting markups, a rate lock guarantee, and high-risk merchant support. For businesses processing $10,000 or more per month who plan to stay with their processor for years, the rate lock alone could save hundreds annually compared to processors that creep rates upward.

If you are currently with a traditional processor and want to know how your rates compare, a statement audit will show you the exact markup you are paying. HMS’s published rates make it easy to calculate whether a switch saves money.
