Processor
Payline Data
A decent interchange-plus processor with genuinely merchant-friendly terms (month-to-month, no ETF, PCI included). Worth considering if you need high-risk merchant support or HIPAA compliance. For standard low-risk businesses, Helcim offers better rates with no monthly fee.

Who Payline Data is for
Payline Data is an interchange-plus processor that does two things most competitors do not: accept high-risk merchants and offer a HIPAA-compliant healthcare plan. If your business falls into either category, Payline should be on your shortlist.
Payline was acquired by Pineapple Payments in 2017, which was then acquired by Fiserv in 2021. The paylinedata.com website is still active and onboarding merchants under its own brand. The Fiserv connection gives Payline access to the Clover POS ecosystem and a large processing network, though it also introduces the risk of future fee changes driven by corporate priorities.
For standard low-risk businesses (retail, restaurants, services), Payline is a solid mid-tier option with genuinely merchant-friendly terms: month-to-month contracts, zero early termination fee, PCI compliance included, and a free first month. The rates are competitive but not the cheapest. If you do not need high-risk support or HIPAA compliance, Helcim and Dharma offer lower total costs.
The pricing
Payline offers two main plans, both interchange-plus:
| Plan | Monthly fee | Markup (in-person) | Markup (online) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Payline Start | $10/month | IC + 0.20-0.40% + $0.10 | N/A | Brick-and-mortar |
| Payline Connect | $20/month | N/A | IC + 0.30-0.75% + $0.20 | Ecommerce |
| Payline Medical | $10/month | Custom | Custom | Healthcare (HIPAA) |
A note on the markup ranges: sources vary on Payline’s exact rates. Payline’s own materials cite the lower end (0.20% in-person, 0.30% online). Third-party review sites cite the higher end (0.40% in-person, 0.75% online). The rate you receive likely depends on your volume, industry, and negotiation. Ask for the exact markup in writing before signing.
Additional fees:
- Chargeback: $25
- Monthly processing minimum: $25 (if your processing fees do not reach $25, you pay the difference)
- PCI compliance: Included
- Setup fee: $0
- Early termination fee: $0
- First month: Free
The $25 monthly minimum is worth flagging. If you process $3,000/month at an effective rate of 2.5%, your fees are $75, well above the minimum. But if you have a slow month at $500 in volume, your fees might only be $15, and Payline charges you the remaining $10 to reach the $25 minimum. For businesses with inconsistent volume, this adds up.
The high-risk advantage
Most processors on this site (Helcim, Square, Stripe, Dharma) decline high-risk merchants or terminate their accounts without warning. Payline explicitly accepts businesses that other processors will not:
- CBD and hemp products
- Supplements and nutraceuticals
- Firearms and ammunition
- Coaching and consulting with recurring billing
- Subscription boxes with high chargeback potential
- Travel agencies
- Tobacco and vape shops
High-risk merchants typically pay higher interchange rates (set by Visa and Mastercard, not Payline) and may face additional requirements like rolling reserves. But having a processor that will not freeze your account or drop you after a chargeback spike has real business value. If you have been declined by Square or had your Stripe account terminated, Payline is worth a call.
The HIPAA-compliant Payline Medical plan serves a similar niche: healthcare providers who need payment processing that meets regulatory requirements. The $10/month plan includes HIPAA compliance infrastructure and has no monthly minimum, which makes it accessible for smaller practices.
How Payline compares
For a standard low-risk business processing $15,000/month in-person ($40 average ticket, 375 transactions):
| Processor | Model | Estimated monthly cost | Monthly fee | Annual difference vs Payline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Payline Start (0.30% + $0.10) | IC+ | ~$322 | $10 | — |
| Helcim (0.40% + $0.08) | IC+ | ~$360 | $0 | +$456/yr |
| Dharma (0.15% + $0.08) | IC+ | ~$303 | $25 | -$228/yr |
| Square (2.6% + $0.15) | Flat | ~$446 | $0 | +$1,488/yr |
At $15,000/month, Payline is cheaper than Helcim (because Helcim’s higher percentage markup outweighs Payline’s $10 monthly fee at this volume) and significantly cheaper than Square. Dharma edges Payline out on rates but charges a higher monthly fee ($25 vs $10).
The breakeven against Helcim shifts at lower volumes. Below roughly $10,000/month, Helcim’s $0 monthly fee makes it cheaper despite the higher markup. Above $10,000, Payline’s lower markup starts winning.
For online businesses, the comparison is less favorable. Payline Connect’s $20/month fee plus 0.30-0.75% + $0.20 markup puts it in a similar range to Stripe (2.9% + $0.30 all-in). The value proposition for online merchants is weaker unless you need high-risk support.
Bottom line
Payline Data is a processor that does not try to be everything to everyone. The rates are competitive, the terms are merchant-friendly, and the contract is genuinely month-to-month with no early termination fee. PCI compliance is included, and the first month is free.
The standout use cases are high-risk merchants who need a processor that will not drop them, and healthcare providers who need HIPAA compliance. For these businesses, Payline fills a gap that Helcim, Square, and Stripe do not.
For standard low-risk businesses, Payline is a reasonable choice but not the best. Helcim offers lower total costs below $10,000/month and better tooling. Dharma offers slightly lower markups. Both have stronger pricing transparency. If you are on Payline and want to know whether you could do better, a statement audit will show you the exact markup you are paying versus what alternatives would charge on the same transactions.
